Officers and Board of Directors

Burnard Barney III moved into this position on January 1, 2008. Most of us know him as Hank and he is one of the group's original members. He is a C5-C6 quadriplegic but by seeing him you'd think he is a paraplegic. He is our resident computer freak and he loves the outdoors especially going fishing. He currently has his own small business that he has at his home. He is the oldest of six kids two brothers and three sisters. This August he will be 49 and enjoying every minute of it. His injury occurred July 12, 1981 from a diving related incident. He also holds an Associates Degree in Applied Science majoring in Farm Management from what is now Owens Community College.

  • Vice-President

Jim Beckley: Jim is 50 and married to his wife Ellen. I have six kids ages 5 to 24 and I have one grandchild that is a year old. My daughter who lives in Denver Colorado is expecting in November. I am an engineer, my specialty is/was in programming robots. I consider myself a workaholic sometimes putting in 70-90 hours a week. Now I'm going to school four days a week taking three classes. With any luck I'll receive my degree in the summer of 2004. The new degree is in Engineering/AutoCAD Specialist. My injury is at the C5 level and my accident (automobile) occurred  about 4 years ago in Michigan. Jim was elected to this office in June 2004.

  • Secretary

Debbie Coates was elected to this office in June 2007 and will continue until elections in June 2008. Debbie is a relatively new injury and has shown that she can be very persistent. She is also a member of the Toledo Raptors Wheelchair Athletic team.

  • Treasurer

Debbie Burke: On March 9, 1999 God took my family’s lives in a different direction.  I broke my back and became a T7 paraplegic.  We were reminded that God is in control and we have had to adjust to my being in a wheelchair.  With the help of the Lord, we have been able to make those adjustments.  I am now on disability retirement from Toledo Public Schools.  I am still active in my church, Zion Lutheran, on Nebraska Avenue.  I was Secretary for the NWONSCIA for many years before becoming Treasurer in 2006.  I have been a member of the Toledo Raptors since 2000 and encourage everyone to become an athlete and get involved.  We always have a great time at all the competitions we go to.  For the past 2 years, I have also been actively involved with Newborns in Need.  We knit, sew and crochet items for babies in hospitals and pregnancy centers.  I married my wonderful husband, Steve, on June 16, 1979.  We have two sons.  Tim was born in March 1982 and Tom was born in March 1987.  Now that I am not working full time and have more Deb time, I have returned to my childhood love of reading novels.
